A Special Note on When to Use EmergencyServices

It is important for patients to understand that Emergency Services are for true emergencies. If you don’t know whether your emergency is life-threatening or not, take the safe approach and come in. However, if you don’t need this high level of care, visiting an urgent care center or your personal physician can be more affordable and more convenient.

When sudden and severe illnesses afflict you and your family, St. Jude Medical Center’s Emergency Services is ready to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our board-certified physicians, nurses and specialty staff are trained to respond quickly to any emergency medical situation.

A special note on when to use emergency services

It is important for patients to understand that Emergency Services are for true emergencies. If you don’t know whether your emergency is life-threatening or not, take the safe approach and come in. However, if you don’t need this high level of care, consider options such as more affordable urgent care or a visit to your general practice physician.

About our physicians

The hospital has contracted with St. Jude Emergency Medical Group to provide physician services in the Emergency Department. These physicians are independent contractors, not employees of the hospital, who contract separately with healthcare insurers and healthcare plans. As a result, they may not be in the same networks as the hospital. If you have any questions regarding whether these physicians are covered by your insurance, you should contact your insurance provider directly. To contact the ER group contracted to our hospital, please call (844) 486-7184

When you arrive at Emergency Services, you will sign in and be assessed by an experienced triage nurse.

Depending on your condition and its urgency, you may be taken to different locations in emergency services for laboratory testing, X-ray or imaging, or further evaluation. Throughout this process, you will be assisted by qualified and specially trained emergency services staff.

St. Jude's Emergency Services provide care for nearly 72,000 patients every year and offers Orange and Los Angeles County residents some of the most sophisticated diagnostic and treatment options available in emergency medicine today, including:

  • Bedside ultrasound
  • The newest-generation CT and MRI imaging
  • State-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories
  • The best evidence-based protocols for treating heart attacks and strokes

Many individuals are often unsure whether a situation rises to the level of emergency. We ask that if you or a loved one are experiencing one of the following conditions, please call 911 immediately:

  • Anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction)
  • Stroke
  • Bloody diarrhea with weakness
  • Chest pain
  • Coma (unresponsive victim)
