St. Jude Simulation Lab
The St. Jude Medical Center Simulation Lab offers an innovative and highly
sophisticated training environment for all disciplines and specialties
throughout the hospital. With its state-of-the-art simulation capabilities
and numerous high-fidelity manikins, the Sim Lab recreates countless real-life
medical scenarios. In this learning laboratory, our caregivers perfect
critical-thinking and clinical skills while also enhancing collaboration
and communication, allowing a "team of experts" to become an
"expert team" by improving the rapid recognition and management
of clinical problems.
This investment in continuous learning and ongoing training is an important
part of how we are pursuing exceptional patient safety and clinical outcomes.
What makes this program unique:
The most advanced simulation technology available. Our computer-controlled, lifelike manikins can mimic hundreds of medical
conditions and situations in very realistic detail. They can breathe,
bleed, talk, cry, display the full range of vital signs, and provide humanlike
responses to interventions such as chest compressions, intubation and
A team of expert simulation and clinical educators. Our experienced clinical educators create and guide customized simulations
to meet specific needs, from mastering new evidence-based protocols to
practicing highly-complex multidisciplinary treatment scenarios.
A commitment to continuous improvement. Through simulation training, our staff and physicians can practice high-risk
or rare procedures in a safe environment. By enhancing and refining these
skills, we’re able to bring very high quality of care to conditions
or situations that many healthcare professionals only see once or twice
in their career.
A commitment to multidisciplinary care. In situations where patient outcomes can depend on a team’s effectiveness,
efficiency and ability to work together—such as surgical and code
teams—simulation training develops a culture where members of care
delivery teams work together to deliver safe, reliable care to our patients.
“St. Jude is a leader in demonstrating how simulation training can
be used to improve patient care,” explains Shawn Aguirre, MSN, RN,
CMSRN, one of five clinical educators who oversee the Simulation Lab education
and training. “We are grateful to the community donors who made
the purchase of these state-of-the-art manikin possible. Their gift is
used every day to pursue excellence.”
