Who is at risk for developing lymphedema?

Lymphedema is most often caused by radiation therapy, mastectomy, removal of the lymph nodes, or chronic circulation problems. Less frequently, individuals are born with lymphedema or develop it after vascular surgery.

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is the swelling of soft tissue due to an accumulation of lymphatic fluid. It is a common and often serious condition which typically affects the arms and legs, but can also occur in the neck, head, abdomen and genitalia.

Typical symptoms include swelling or pain, resulting in painful joint movement and limited mobility. Tissue beneath the skin can become hard and fibrotic, impairing the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area.
