Fall 2007

$1 Million Gift from Henry L. Guenther Foundation

A $1 million grant from the Henry L. Guenther Foundation will allow St. Jude Medical Center to treat more heart patients, quicker and with pinpoint accuracy. With this generous grant, a cutting-edge cardiovascular digital imaging system will soon call St. Jude home.

When the technology is installed in St. Jude’s Cardiac and Vascular Catheterization Labs in the new Southwest Patient Tower, opening fall 2008, it will offer imaging resolution four times greater than conventional systems, giving physicians unparalleled views of the heart’s coronary vessels.

Heart disease kills more Americans each year than any other disease, and it is the number one reason why patients are admitted to St. Jude. As residents of north Orange County grow older, the need to perform advanced diagnostic and interventional procedures for cardiac and vascular conditions also increases. However, heart disease isn’t just for seniors any more: St. Jude has seen a 50 percent increase in heart patients under the age of 60—a startling and unfortunate fact.

St. Jude Medical Center is the area’s premier heart center, and was honored to be named Orange County’s first Cardiovascular Receiving Center. St. Jude is committed to staying at the forefront of cardiac care by offering a dedicated team of heart surgeons, state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies and a highly successful cardiac wellness program.

The grant brings the campaign total to $38.5 million toward the $50 million goal for philanthropic support. Total cost to build and equip the five-story tower is $123 million.
