When a heart attack occurs it’s crucial to get the clogged artery open – usually through balloon angioplasty – within 90 minutes. Considered a national standard, this 90 minute door-to-balloon benchmark is what every hospital should be providing – yet according to a new study, only about one-third of the nation’s hospitals are. St. Jude was one of the few hospitals to meet the standard – an outcome that doesn’t surprise Alan Borsari, M.D., St. Jude Medical Center cardiologist. “We offer a remarkable level of expertise, from our ED to our state-of-the art Cardiac and Vascular Catheterization Labs. Long before there was a national guideline, we’ve had the skill and systems to move heart attacks patients into life-saving procedures without delay.”
