2013 Accreditations & Awards

Target: Stroke Honor Roll
St. Jude Medical Center has been recognized for excellence in emergency stroke care on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Designed to improve outcomes for patients with ischemic strokes – the most common type related to blocked or reduced blood flow – Target: Stroke helps hospitals achieve door-to-needle times of 60 minutes or less for the administration of rt-PA to eligible patients. Recognition on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll involves consistently achieving multiple gold standard time targets for emergency stroke care.

Blue Distinction® Center
Blue Cross and Blue Shield named St. Jude Medical Center a Blue Distinction Center for cardiac care, knee and hip replacement, and spine surgery. The honor recognizes hospitals that demonstrate expertise in providing quality care and is designed to help consumers identify which hospitals offer better outcomes (e.g., fewer medical complications, fewer readmissions and higher survival rates) in the delivery of specialty care.

Excellence in the Operating Room
St. Jude Medical Center achieved the Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) Strong designation from the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), one of the largest specialty nursing credentialing organizations. Only facilities where 50 percent or more of the operating room nursing staff have attained CNOR credentialing are awarded this recognition. The CNOR Strong program was launched to recognize these facilities, which further advance a culture of professionalism and promote improved patient outcomes.

Three-year Accreditation for Rehabilitation
St. Jude Centers for Rehabilitation received a three-year accreditation (the most years possible) by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) for inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. St. Jude is just one of only two facilities in Southern California to receive accreditation in both spinal cord and brain injury (inpatient and outpatient), and one of three in the state to receive accreditation in outpatient stroke rehabilitation.

Accreditation by the NAPBC
The St. Jude Kathryn T. McCarty Breast Center received a three year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Accreditation by the NAPBC is granted only to those centers committed to providing the best possible care to patients with diseases of the breast. Each breast center must undergo a rigorous evaluation and demonstrate a multidisciplinary approach that encourages optimal care and the most effective treatment options available.

Selected for SWIFT PRIME Stroke Study
St. Jude Medical Center stands with only 20 medical centers across the United States selected to participate in a new clinical trial. The SWIFT PRIME study, which launched in January 2013, will examine acute ischemic stroke patients treated with either intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (IV tPA) alone or IV tPA in combination with Covidien's Solitaire™ FR Revascularization Device, an overlapping stent-based technology that provides substantially improved clinical outcomes to the previous generation of devices. This trial is an important milestone in the evolution of stroke therapeutics.

Certified Quality Breast Center
The St. Jude Kathryn T. McCarty Breast Center was recognized as a Certified Quality Breast Center by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC), which tracks and measures quality performance in more than 33 indicators, from timeliness of care and pathology results to surgical treatments and patient satisfaction. The NQMBC is part of the National Consortium of Breast Centers.

Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award
St. Jude Medical Center was again awarded the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes St. Jude's success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
